Wild for mushrooms: Fungi fair in Santa Cruz this weekend will highlight local pickin's

The winter rains have done their thing and wild mushrooms are popping up overnight, while locally, commercially grown mushrooms are showing up in produce departments.

Santa Cruz certainly loves mushrooms topping burgers and steaks, in soups and salads, and as appetizers and entrees. But did you know they also can help kick off your quest to eat healthy and lose weight in the new year?

Mushrooms are naturally low in carbohydrates, rich in fiber, low in sodium and high in potassium, making them a great for choice for both weight loss and heart health. According to the Mushroom Council, a serving of button mushrooms five to six is only 18 calories, has zero grams of fat and 300 mg of potassium. One medium portobello has only 22 calories and zero fat, compared to a 3-ounce beef burger with about 230 calories and 14 grams of fat.

The button mushroom, Agaricus bisporus, also called a white mushroom, is the most common edible variety. It is white or pale brown with an unopened cap. The crimini mushroom, another member of the Agaricus bisporus species, has a darker, coffee-colored cap, earthier flavor, and denser texture. Also popular are oyster mushrooms known for their delicate flavor. And shitakes, known for their healing properties, are delicious when sliced into a warm bowl of miso soup or sauteed with other foods.
